The hardest ingredient on the list is the Leather Scraps. The Tanning Rack is one of the more difficult Workbench upgrades to craft since so much of its recipe calls for animal drops.

However, this is a good thing to keep in mind in case you want to upgrade a distant Workbench later on - you might not need to build all the upgrades to make what you want. Technically, most of the Workbench's recipes, like Fenris armor, the Root Armor, and more, are unlocked by just the Chopping Block, but you won't have access to these items until much later in the game. The Chopping Block will unlock Leather Armor at the Workbench and more importantly allow you to upgrade basic weapons like the Flint Axe and Flint Spear which will be essential in beating Eikthyr and making your way through the Black Forest. Flint spawns in the Meadows along coastlines and river banks, but the latter location is the better place to look for these white stones. Out of the two ingredients, Flint is definitely the harder one to find, but it can be easier to gather if you know where to look. This isn’t a sure-fire way to acquire the resource, however, so making a Bronze axe is the safer option. If you don’t want to go through all of that though, Fine Wood can also be found in shipwrecks off the coast of the Black Forest. The Bronze axe can then be used to chop down Birch trees and receive small amounts of Fine Wood. As for the Smelter, this can be created once you acquire surtling ore, which is found in random chests or from a Surtling drop.Īfter all of this is complete, you can create a Bronze axe using four Wood, eight Bronze and two Leather Scraps. Valheim is cluttered with trees but only some are immediately accessible.
